Thoughts on Tumblarity

I’ll start of by saying I feel the new Tumblarity feature is pretty awesome. I like being to see a nice graphical version of my Tumblr stats. I also really like the design of the Tumblarity Page. With that said, here are some things that are not-so-awesome about it:

  • Showing blog ranks. This one’s tricky. Some people will love to see their blog rank. I’m not going to lie it’s nice to know that your blog is ranked higher then x other blogs. But at the same time, I feel like it creates an inferiority complex. It makes others feel bad for having a low rank. At the same time, it creates competition. I have a feeling people will focus more on getting a higher score to get a higher rank. The plus side to this is that hopefully people will post better content (but who’s to judge what content is good)?
  • The Tumblarity Algorithm. I don’t really know how exactly the Tumblarity score is generated but it seems to be based on some kind of ratio involving the number of posts, # of followers, # of likes you’ve received and the # of reblogs. The only flaw I see to this is that this ratio doesn’t seem fair to old-time users. For example, I came across someone whose rank seems to be pretty close to mine. The reason being that this person has only 292 posts which has more likes and reblogs then mine. I agree it could be solely cause there content is better. But at the same time, I started using Tumblr right after it came out and therefore had over 500 posts long before the like or the reblog button existed. Therefore I don’t think it’s fair to judge based on the number of posts.

I am not going to join the Tumblarity-bashing bandwagon. As usual this a change, and most users will always be against change since “the new becomes Threatening, the Old Reassuring”. I do like the feature in general and just feel like it needs some minor adjustments.
